Culinary greetings from Poland
As part of the 2nd pilot course for the German-Polish advanced training "Groß für Klein - Duzi dla małych" (Big for Small) last Friday, two very special seminars were on the timetable for the specialist teacher training class at the “Christoph Lüders” vocational school centre in Görlitz:: “Polish Cooking" and "Discovering the Euroregion through Play".
The pupils had already researched typical Polish recipes in advance and translated them from Polish into German. Creative ideas for Easter table decorations were also collected.
The seminar day started with a presentation of Easter customs and traditions in Poland. Mrs. Brückner, a specialist teacher of Polish and a Polish native herself, was able to tell the pupils a lot of interesting things, such as the tradition of blessing the food on Easter Saturday in the Polish church.
After this introduction to the topic, the practical part – the preparation of the selected recipes – began. After division into groups, a 4-course menu was prepared. And of course, it had to include the classic dish, Pierogi ruskie (Russian pierogi). For a sweet end to the menu, a Tortowy zając (Hasentorte - Easter Bunny Cake) was created.
After two hours of slicing, stirring, cooking and baking, all of the dishes were ready and before lunch, each of the four groups was allowed to present "their" dish and briefly explain the ingredients and the methods they had used. And then it was time to sit down at the festively set table: "Smacznego" and the joy and pride of having prepared a (small) Polish Easter menu together was written all over the faces of the students.
To finish the day, Mrs. Brückner had brought typical Polish games, songs and rhymes with her. These were tried out together and it was a chance to expand their Polish vocabulary. It was also considered how these actions might be integrated into the day-to-day life of the day nursery as offerings in the neighbouring language.
With this new store of knowledge, not only about Easter in Poland, but also with the exciting stories from their neighbouring country, the pupils taking part started a well-deserved weekend and might perhaps even use the following days to prepare one of the dishes they have recently discovered.
