European Union finances renovation of Château de Lassay
A project visit to the Château de Lassay was organised at the beginning of June 2018; it was an opportunity to meet the project leaders and to see the work carried out to restore this historic monument in Mayenne.
Château de Lassay was classified as an historical monument in 1862 and has been open to visitors since the 1930s. For several years now, it has been moving towards a policy of developing public events. These are original, but unfortunately limited due to the state of deterioration of the buildings.
The renovation of the castle entrance is part of the new direction the castle is taking. Indeed, in addition to the fact that it is both the first thing the visitors see, as well as their only way through towards the interior of the castle, its dilapidation had, until this point, made it impossible to use the barbican (which it overhangs) and had even led to the condemnation of its main drawbridge, making access to the castle and its evacuation very difficult.
The project implementation procedures are as follows:
- Complete restoration of the châtelet [large gatehouse] at the entrance: masonry, framework and roofing
- Renovation of the two drawbridges
- Upgrading of the barbican to attain safety standards (ramp, guardrail, etc.), acquisition of equipment (seating stands, platform, etc.).
Objectives of the operation:
The operation aims to enable the development and exploitation of
the barbican for cultural, historical and sporting activities within an
exceptional setting. It also aims to strengthen the tourist appeal of the
Château, and thus the city of Lassay-les-Châteaux.
Cost of the project: €816,751.22
Contribution from EAFTD LEADER : €40,000
Regional contribution (DCSA): €155,831.
